Yoga

Hatha Yoga

The Sanskrit word yoga translates to "yoke" or "union" - referring to the balance, control, and unification of the mind, body, and spirit of a practitioner.  This concept of union and balance is the key to the benefirts of practicing yoga, which far surpass those of a simple physical fitness routine.

Modern medical research now agrees that the mind and the body are linked and the health of one affects the health of the other.  Practicing yoga helps to gently stretch, purify and heal the body and thereby bring balance and harmony to the mind.  In turn, mental balance and harmony bring healthy, happiness and fulfillment. Practicing yoga gives you the time and the techniques to become aware of aspects of yourself that you tend to overlook in everyday life.  At a physical level, yoga teaches youto be aware of your breathing patterns and of areas of tension or tiredness in your muscles and joints.  At a mental and emotional level, yoga helps you to notice your patterns of thought, to be aware of the effects of your attitudes and habits, and to relax your thoughts. Yoga is a practical tool that helps you to become more aware.

There is a popular misconception of yoga that one must be athletic or super flexible to practice.  While experienced practitioners can attain levels of flexibility that seem almost unreal, the fact is that yoga postures can be attained by most anyone with the right props and supports.  Even those with a very limited range of motion or balance issues can practice yoga and reap the benefits.

Studies have shown that people practicing yoga have experienced dramatic increases in lung capacity, improved ability to handle stress, and reductions in body weight, cholesterol and blood-sugar levels.  Yoga has also been shown to help people suffering with arthritis and arteriosclerosis.

Yoga is open to all ages, abilities, and religious backgrounds.
